Can I refinish a stained butcher block top to make food safe?
I have a piece of furniture that I am converting to a butcher block but the top used to be a layout table and was finished with stain at one time. I am wondering if I sand it down and refinish with salad bowl oil or mineral oil if it would be safe to use. It is a 7 foot long counter that will primarily be used for baking and dough prep. Also are any woods not safe for use as a butcher block?

There is a product called “butcher block” that is a food-safe finish used for these type of projects. It works well too.
