Bronze Age Textiles: Men, Women and Wealth

New – In the ancient civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean, textiles were generally much more costly than foodstuffs, animals or bronzes; it is very likely that the same was the case throughout prehistoric Europe. In this study, the first for over seventy years, Klavs Randsborg examines completely preserved woollen dresses, both female and male, from Danish oak coffin graves of the early second millennium BC. These garments, matched in age and superb preservation only by finds from A

Excerpt: Erith (pronounced ( listen)) is a place in the London Borough of Bexley, southeast London on the River Thames. Erith’s town centre has undergone a series of modernisations since 1961. Pre-medieval Work at the former British Gypsum site in Church Manorway by the Museum of London Archaeological Service showed that the area had a dense forest of oak, yew and alder during the Neolithic Period, which by the Bronze Age had given way in part to sedge fen. Erith ward (green) within the London Borough of Bexley (yellow)Their work at the former site of Erith School in Belmont Road revealed the presence of prehistoric settlement, and of a substantial settlement or farmstead dating from the first century. Following the collapse of Roman rule at the beginning of the 5th Century, Britain was colonised by invaders from northern Europe called the Anglo-Saxons. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle tells us that they won the Battle of Crayford in 457, slaying many men in the process, and shortly after claimed the whole of Kent. Their different way of life was reflected in their pattern of settlement. The town and country estates of the Roman bureaucrats gave way to a network of villages, occupied by warriors and farmers. Erith was one of these villages, and has a Saxon name, thought to have been derived from a word meaning ‘muddy harbour’ or ‘gravelly landing place’. There was probably a church on the site of the present St John the Baptist church during Roman times and almost certainly a Saxon building. The early settlement was based around this church, meaning that the centre of Erith was once west of its current location. The earliest reference to the area is in a Latin charter of 695 recording a grant by the Bishop of the East Saxons of certain lands at Erith. In ear… More:

Excerpt: Southern Elevation of the derelict Rhyd-y-gors Mansion, just prior to demolition in 1971. Drawn by Mrs E. M. Lodwick. Courtesy of the family of Mrs E.M. Lodwick. The name Rhyd-y-gors or Rhydygors has been associated with two historic sites near the market town of Carmarthen in Southwest Wales. The first was the Norman Rhyd-y-gors Castle and the other was Rhyd-y-gors Mansion, home of the Edwardes family. Rhyd-y-gors Castle was constructed on the order of King William II 1087-1100, known as Rufus, by the Norman invader William Fitz Baldwin, Sheriff of Devon, in the late 11th century (10931094) . It was situated on a bluff overlooking the River Towy, about one mile South of Carmarthen. The castle was located on the East bank of the Towy, at a place where there was an ancient ford in the river. The word Rhyd-y-gors in Welsh means Ford of the Marsh . The castle is thought to have been a timber structure surrounded by earthworks, but all trace of it is now gone. Drawing of ancient British bronze shield found in the

Excerpt: The Cross of Cong is an early 12th century Irish Christian ornamented processional cusped cross, which was, as an inscription says, made for Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair (d. 1156), King of Connacht and High King of Ireland to donate to the Cathedral church of the period that was located at Tuam, County Galway, Ireland. The cross was subsequently moved to Cong Abbey at Cong, County Mayo, from which it takes its name. It was designed to be placed on top of a staff and is also a reliquary, designed to hold a piece of the purported True Cross. This gave it additional importance as an object of reverence and was undoubtedly the reason for the object’s elaborate beauty. The Cross will be on display in the National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, from Wednesday, 31st March 2010 for one year. This is the first time the Cross has been out of Dublin since the 1830s. Usually, the Cross is displayed at the National Museum of Ireland, Dublin, having previously been in the Museum of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. It is considered one of finest examples of metalwork and decorative art of its period in Western Europe. detail of the Cross of CongThe cross consists of an oak cross, covered in gold, silver, niello, copper, bronze, brass, enamel, coloured glass, and other ornamentation. In addition to traditional Irish design features from Insular art, the cross also displays some Viking and Romanesque influences, including ‘strapwork’ decoration in the Urnes style. It has been suggested that the older Insular stylistic elements may be deliberate revivalism. The decoration includes minute golden filigree work in an intertwined pattern called on front and back. From the base heads of beasts on each side grip the cross in their mouth,… More:
