Freshwater Fishtank question?
In my tank, I have:
1 bala shark
1 lace catfish
1 spotted catfish
1 betta
1 Pleco
At the moment, I have a 10 gallon tank, but will be upgrading to a 30 gallon soon. All these fish were chosen for looks by my family and now, doing some research, I’m kind of worried. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Should I have more than one of any of these? It seems the bala shark should be in a school? And also both the catfish also? And I have some plants and little figurines….it seems I should have some rocks or tubes and such for the fish to really hide under/in? Any opinions will be so very helpful.
Thank you
Sadly I’m afraid you’re going to need to either get a tank much larger than a 30g, or do some rehoming. Buying fish based solely on looks is not the way to stock a tank as you are now finding out.
Balas are shoaling fish that get over 12″ long, for a shoal you need a tank a minimum of 6 feet long, big ol’ tank. (They are Cyprinids, NOT Tetras which are Characins).
Synos, your Lace Catfish (and poss that “spotted” catfish too), can also get very large and need at least a 55g. Your Pleco could get anything from 2″ to over 24″, they are also huge waste producers.
You may be better of getting that 30g, rehoming the majority of your fish, and stocking based on adult size and compatibility instead! The only fish you have at the moment that’s suitable for a 10g is the Betta!
